Why does the Motor Run but the Tail Lift Won't Go Up?

First, you can check if the oil level in the tank is too low, which could cause the oil pump to fail to draw in oil. Secondly, check whether the electromagnetic unloading valve is in a normally open state due to coil failure or the valve core being stuck by impurities. If the voltage is too low and the motor speed is insufficient, it may also fail to provide sufficient lifting force.

What Type of Hydraulic Fluid is Recommended for the Tail Lift Hydraulic Power Pack?

Normally, we recommend using standard anti-wear hydraulic oil ISO VG 32 or VG 46. If you are mainly working in cold regions, to prevent the oil from being too thick and causing difficulties for the hydraulic pump to draw in the oil, you can use specialised low-temperature hydraulic oil such as ISO VG 22.

Where is the Tail Lift Hydraulic Power Pack Typically Installed on the Vehicle?

The installation location you have chosen should be firm, impact-resistant and easy to maintain. Common installation positions include the rear of the truck, near the chassis crossbeam, or on the side of the cargo box at the rear. Remember that you also need to leave sufficient space for heat dissipation and maintenance.

Does the Tail Lift Hydraulic Power Pack Support Vertical Installation?

Our standard tail lift hydraulic power pack is usually installed horizontally. If you have to adopt a vertical installation, we can adjust the fuel tank structure, suction port position, pump inlet method, etc., to keep stable pump suction and avoid problems such as air pockets and insufficient fuel supply.

What is a Tail Lift Hydraulic Power Pack?

The Tail Lift Hydraulic Power Pack is a hydraulic power unit specifically designed to provide power for vehicle tailboards or lifting platforms. It can deliver high-pressure hydraulic oil to hydraulic actuators such as hydraulic cylinders in the tailgate system, thereby driving the tailgate to rise and fall smoothly.

Key Components of the Tail Lift Hydraulic Power Pack

Drive Motor

The motor is the energy source for the tail lift hydraulic power pack. It converts the input electrical energy into mechanical energy. According to the vehicle power configuration, tail lift hydraulic power packs typically use 12V or 24V DC motors.

The power and torque output of the motor need to match the requirements of the hydraulic pump to make sure sufficient power is provided to drive the entire hydraulic system.

Hydraulic Pump

The hydraulic pump is connected to the output shaft of the motor, converting mechanical energy into hydraulic energy. It sucks the hydraulic oil into the pump and applies pressure to it. The high-pressure oil is then conveyed through the valve path to the actuator, which drives the tail plate to rise and fall.

Gear pumps are used in most tail lift hydraulic power packs. It has a compact structure, stable output, and high cost performance.

Hydraulic Oil Tank

The oil tank is used to store hydraulic oil and dissipate heat. It is usually made of strong impact-resistant plastic or corrosion-resistant steel.

Some oil tanks have a special internal structure. It can also filter out impurities in hydraulic oil and separate bubbles generated during the oil return process, preventing pump body suction or oil emulsification.

Valve Assembly

The valves in the tail lift hydraulic power pack are usually integrated onto a single valve body. They work together to guide and regulate the flow direction, flow rate, and pressure of the oil. It usually includes directional control valves, relief valves and flow control valves, etc.

How does the Tail Lift Hydraulic Power Pack Work?

When you issue an action command through the remote control, the electrical control module immediately receives the signal and drives the motor to start. The mechanical energy output by the motor is directly transmitted to the gear pump.

The gear pump sucks in the hydraulic oil from the oil tank and pressurises it through the meshing of gears. High pressure oil is transported to the control valve group through pipelines. Each valve switches the oil passage according to the command signal, accurately controlling the flow direction and pressure of hydraulic oil.

After the high-pressure oil is delivered to the rodless chamber of the tailgate hydraulic cylinder, it pushes the piston upwards, driving the tailgate to slowly rise. At the same time, the valve group adjusts the flow rate in real time to avoid the impact caused by excessive rise speed.

When the action is completed and the operation command is terminated, the motor stops running and the control valve is usually in a closed state. In this way, the high-pressure oil will be sealed in the cylinder pipeline, keeping the tailboard firmly in its current position.

During the descent process, the control valve changes the direction of the oil passage, and the pressurised oil is directed to the piston chamber of the oil cylinder. Or, under the effect of its own weight, the oil flows back to the oil tank, thereby making the tail plate to descend smoothly.

Tips to Purchase the Right Tail Lift Hydraulic Power Pack

Confirm Compatibility with Vehicle Power Supply

Firstly, you need to confirm whether the driving voltage of the tail lift hydraulic power pack matches the vehicle power system. Light box trucks often use a 12V DC power supply, while heavy trucks generally use a 24V system. These two types of power units have similar appearances, but a voltage mismatch can cause malfunctions.

Connecting a 12V motor to a 24V system will cause the motor to overload and burn out instantly. If a 24V motor is connected to a 12V system, the tail lift hydraulic power pack will not be able to generate sufficient force.

Match the Pressure and Flow Required by the System

The load capacity and working speed requirements of different tailboards are different. The pressure and flow output of the tail lift hydraulic power pack need to be matched with the tail plate hydraulic cylinder. Insufficient pressure can cause the tailboard to fail to lift smoothly, while low flow can result in slow lifting and lowering of the tailboard.

Consider the Volume and Material of the Fuel Tank

The volume of the fuel tank determines the continuous fuel supply and heat dissipation capacity of the tail lift hydraulic power pack. The oil tank must be able to hold all hydraulic oil and reserve at least 10-15% space to prevent hydraulic oil from overflowing due to thermal expansion.

In addition, for vehicles driving in rainy, snowy or coastal areas, you can choose semi-transparent polymer plastic fuel tanks. It allows you to easily check the oil level visually and has strong anti-corrosion properties. For harsh road conditions such as mines or construction sites, reinforced steel fuel tanks may be a better choice.

Choose Single-Acting or Double-Acting as Needed

The hydraulic control method of the oil cylinder may vary for different types of tailboards. Some cantilever and vertical tailboards have single-acting lifting and flipping actions. Some folding tailboards use double-acting power control for the flipping action.

You need to make sure that the internal oil circuit structure of the valve block in the power pack matches the number and sequence of actions of the oil cylinders on your tailboard.

Evaluate Installation Space and Oil Port Direction

The tail lift hydraulic power pack is usually installed in a confined space. You need to accurately measure the length, width, and height of the installation location. Be sure to leave sufficient space for heat dissipation and maintenance.

At the same time, you should confirm whether the hydraulic oil outlet of the power unit is on the top or the side. Ensure that the oil outlet faces in a direction that is convenient for you to arrange the pipelines, and avoid excessive bending of the pipelines which could cause damage.
